The things I have learned...

It's very funny to me that a cake can be a huge life lesson, but I found out today that it was. This is so silly, but all my life I've wanted to order a birthday cake from a chic, mega hip bakery, and pay the price of the outrageously expensive cake because it must be worth the price. There must be a reason that people pay that amount, because afterall you get what you pay for...right?And so in keeping with our soon-to-be short lived highrise, metropolitan lifestyle, I finally ordered "THE CAKE". We're going all out in our experience here, and since this was a teeny celebration, I decided to finally splurge. I even emailed the Spiderman image I wanted the lady to transfer onto the cake so that it would be perfect for his Spiderman themed party. Here is the cake...

Isn't it beautifully done? But you know what I found out? That beautiful, expensive cake tasted just like the Sams cakes that we like so much. Funny how that works out isn't it? So many times we build something up in our mind, and the entire time we think we are missing out on something great, we are experiencing something great. It's all in our frame of mind and what we are expecting.

I think I've said it before on here, but living in D.C. has taught me a lot. About people. About life. About my children. About myself. And that is why I have done more reflecting here than I have anywhere else. Bottom line is that I am so blessed by this life, these friends, Sams Club cakes and discount stores. I love designer, but I'm happy with store brand. And what I'm realizing is that there are some relationships I'd love to "fix", but that it's not up to me. You can't make anyone like you or believe in you, you just have to like yourself enough to believe in yourself and be true to you are. And in the end that's all you can do. So, that's what I'm doing. I'm going back to my Sams cakes (I'm doing my family a favor by not baking a cake myself...trust me), and as far as wanting to carry on the "City Chick" lifestyle, I'll keep my grocery delivery service and concierge :).

  3. Great post! It is so true how we build things up in our mind or think because it has a big price tag it makes us a "big" person. The cake was beautiful, and it is nice to go "all out" sometimes. But it is nice know that whats important is the time, thought, and love we give ourselves and our kids!
