Eli Update and What’s Wrong With Yankee Doodle…

I posted a while back about having a frustrating weekend with Eli, so I wanted to update about that.  The break from his medicine worked miracles, and that following Monday began a good behavior streak that is still going.  Don’t get me wrong, he’s a normal rambunctious 5 year old who squabbles with his brother…but at least now that he is behaving, that’s all we have had to deal with.  He’s gotten good reports from his teacher and has actually been able to be in the mainstream Kindergarten classroom since then.  I am so proud of him!  He’s been playing so nice with the kids at the playground, and it’s just been so much better around here.  Ahhhhhhh… such a relief.  I can breathe easy…until we have to do it again! :)

He was so cute on Monday when I picked him up.  He said, “What’s wrong with Yankee Doodle?” I just said, “Huh? What do you mean?” And he said, “Why did he ride to town on a pony? Doesn’t he know he could have gotten to town faster on a horse? Ponies are small…they run slower than a big horse!”  And they wonder why he doesn’t ALWAYS want to sing during music class…he’s too busy analyzing the lyrics. He is doing better though, and is participating by singing and sometimes doing the hand movements.  He thinks it’s dumb, and seeing how he acts so much older than his age sometimes and has a brain that I think is older than a 5 year old’s, it’s fitting for him to think that…I understand it.  During VBS he kept looking back at me with this look like WHAT are they doing and WHY do they expect me to do it too! :)   He didn’t understand that it would have made my day to see him hold his finger up when he sang “This Little Light of Mine”.  :)  Oh well…we’re making progress.  He’s definitely very independent.  He doesn’t care what others think, and that is good to some extent.  My brother is like that, and although it drove me NUTS when I was younger, I am appreciating it more now.  It’s a good quality to have.

Alright that’s all for now! I’m off to take Chase to the park! Have a great Wednesday!

  2. Hi Stacey - I went to college with Norman and we're friends on Facebook. I've been seeing his posts about the autism admendment and figured that there must be some personal connection. I found your blog on his profile and just read through your story on your other blog too. Just wanted to say that I'm in awe at your bravery and persistence for your little boy! You are doing an awesome job! My degree is in special ed and I've taught autistic spectrum children - so many times their parents don't want to admit the struggles and pursue the help their child needs. You guys are great parents! Just wanted to encourage you and let you know that I'm praying for your family and will be following your blog. Many blessings!
