The Argument Over Mask Wearing

Over the months, I have seen friends and family post incredibly insensitive and sometimes down right hurtful views on how masks are NOT beneficial. Their argument is not that masks aren't as beneficial as many believe. Their argument is that masks are not beneficial at all. They list doctors and resources, but forget that by the same token, many reputable doctors and hospitals DO advocate for the use of masks for the reason that masks are at least somewhat beneficial even if they aren't a silver bullet. World renowned hospitals like the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic as well as MD Anderson. Among others.

By coming out so vehemently, not even allowing or encouraging educated conversation, but by just being judge and juror that all who do believe in wearing masks are wrong and uneducated... not only is it unproductive and unhelpful, but it is quite honestly hurtful to read on public forums what those closest to you really think of you.

After having COVID, I daresay that even if the protection rate was 10%, many of us would wear it, because ANYTHING... absolutely anything that could lesson your chance of getting it again is worth it. And I would have hoped our family and friends who not only have watched us suffer, but others as well... well, I would have hoped they would have given more grace than to label us as morons (literally called "loony tunes"), and only list doctors against mask wearing. Because there are just as many, if not more, doctors who do advocate for the wearing of masks. And if you care to be open minded about any other viewpoint than your own, here are a few articles below. Everyone can find people who will back their own beliefs. The key is to be compassionate and not hurt others by proclaiming your sources to be the only credible ones. Be open minded to the experiences of others, and be willing to consider that their sources may have at least some merit of truth to them.

That's all I have to say on the subject. I wasn't going to address it at all, but I got tired of all the hate and lack of care...or even our right to wear masks without being mocked.

Here are a couple recent articles showing major medical organizations backing the wearing of masks; real credibility when these organizations speak.

Mayo Clinic

Cleveland Clinic

MD Anderson

Tho only caveats MD Anderson gives for not wearing masks are:

Some people shouldn’t use any type of face mask

Because masks cover up your nose and mouth, they’re not right for everyone.

Avoid using face masks:

  • on kids younger than age 2
  • you have trouble breathing
  • on anyone who can’t remove the mask unless help to do so is available
And there are so many, but I cant post them all. I do not have the energy in me to list all that I have found; there are many.

But here are a few more:

"the CDC recommends people wear simple masks, which can be made from cloth, to slow the spread of COVID-19. Aug 2020"

"Turbulent gas cloud dynamics should influence the design and recommended use of surgical and other masks. These masks can be used both for source control (ie, reducing spread from an infected person) and for protection of the wearer (ie, preventing spread to an unaffected person)."
